CBSE provided Alternate activities for Science Practical Work for Classes 9-10

With the school locked down during the Coronavirus Pandemic, the time available for face-to-face instruction for teachers has reduced in the current academic session. In addition, opportunities for practical teacher-guided practical work for science have also been limited.

In September 2020, the Board vides CBSE Circular No. Acad-65/2020 dated 2 September 2020 directed on the conduct of practical work during the lockdown, where schools have to use Olabsto’s platform to gain a virtual experience of the CBSE curriculum-aligned experiments/activities for classes 9 to 12.

In addition, the Central Board of Secondary Education has designed a set of alternative experiments using simple, easily available home materials that the learners can use to perform these activities at their homes.

The practical activities are designed to have the same learning outcomes as all the laboratory experiments to be done in classes 9 and 10 for 21-22. Apart from this, a list of extracurricular activities from the NCERT Laboratory Manual for 9 (20 activities) and 10 (22 activities) are provided. Learners can use these to explore science concepts and gain a better understanding.

These practical activities are accompanied by step-by-step guides, videos & worksheets for recording students’ observations. For the convenience of the learners, a list of the materials required for each experiment along with the options has been included in the material package. The content is provided by ThinkTac and is also available on the official website of DIKSHA Portal.

While activities and materials have been chosen to be safe for learners, teachers need to review these before handing them over and advise parents whether a specific activity requires supervision. CBSE will provide online training on the use of these activities, details of which will be intimated separately.
